3 Ways To Promote Yourself And Advance Your Career For Free

In today’s digital world, if you don’t have a stellar social media presence, you could be missing out on exclusive career opportunities. “Social media is essentially modern-day word of mouth,” says Jenelle Hamilton, CEO and founder of Jenelle Hamilton PR. “But you need to utilize this tool the right way.”

A successful businesswoman, prior to starting her agency, Jenelle consulted with Tom Ford, for the launch of his first fragrance, Black Orchid. Today, she handles global publicity for many other large brands. With almost two decades of PR experience under her belt, Jenelle has mastered the art of promoting yourself using PR techniques to win jobs, advance your career and get noticed, on social media.

Treat social media like your résumé

Gone are the days when a résumé was all you needed to nab a job. The first thing the majority of recruiters do when reviewing an applicant is look them up on Google and Instagram. Social media is the new calling card, so the way you present yourself online gives potential employers and brands insight into who you are. You have to approach your social media accounts like a content creator. The first step is to take some time to scroll through and audit your timeline. Look at the captions you have written and the content posted. Next, ask yourself these questions: How do you want to be perceived? If you are applying for a job in a particular field, are you posting content related to it? Does the way you present yourself on social media align with what you have listed on your résumé? Does your page need an overhaul? How will an outsider view you? Maybe you need to make some changes and this is a good way to start identifying how you want to construct your brand, which is you.

It’s so important to put yourself out there and make yourself visible. Social media gives you instant access to millions of employers and opportunities at the push of a button, so you should take full advantage of this. The first step is to make a list of the topics that you are passionate about or are related to your career of choice. Start integrating tips into your posts. Share nuggets of information in your stories or go ‘live’ on a social media platform and talk to your followers. “I have gotten so many opportunities from prospective new clients, to features in magazines, because people found me online or viewed my Instagram story. Trust me, people will find you,” says Jenelle. By promoting yourself, you will also demonstrate your passion to potential employers and start positioning you as an expert in your field.

Keep in mind that authenticity is key. At all times, you must stay true to yourself. It’s the best way to attract and connect to a genuine audience. A quick scan of someone’s timeline will show what is important to them. What you post points to what you value.
