Maximising your career potential: Stay organised and prioritise goals during the holiday season
The new year is getting closer, and we are officially just a step away from the holiday season. One of the best things about this time of year is the shift in people’s attitude. It is not only the season to take time off from work or just to relax, the holidays can be difficult for many people as they have to deal with work and all their personal plans as well. However, the beginning of the new year is all about new beginnings and new goals which make people motivated and excited to set goals and dream big!
This blog post will focus on how to prioritise and organise tasks over the holidays, and how to set goals to maximise your career potential for the new year.
Set your priorities and avoid distractions
As we already discussed, the holiday season is full of plans – both personal and professional – making it hard for some people to keep track of them.
One way to eliminate and prioritise your plans or tasks is to create tasks lists, and setting your priorities first, making sure that they will be completed. Also, it is important to divide your tasks into professional and personal to avoid getting overwhelmed.
After you have set your priorities straight and you have a clear plan, it is important to eliminate any potential distractions. People try to reach you a lot more during the holidays than the rest of the year as people have less busy schedules and there are multiple events going on at the same time. It is good to secure the time you have for your tasks by limiting distractions by doing simple things such as setting your phone on silent, eliminating your time on social media, or by keeping a calendar with appointments and tasks you need to complete.
Start self-reflecting
Apart from choosing your priorities to maximise your career potential, it is important to self-reflect and realise what you enjoy more about your current position. Think deeply about your dream position, most importantly if you’re content and happy in your role.
You should also consider any big changes in your life that did not influence your life last year and they do now. For example, if you are a new parent or you have moved to another city making your commute longer than you desire.
After your reflection you can decide if you have to make significant decisions for your future or if you won’t make any changes in your daily life. For example, if you are not satisfied with your salary you can try to get a promotion in your current company or try to get a higher earning position. If you feel that you don’t feel content with your work hours you can start looking for a job position with flexible or remote working to make it more convenient for you. You can also ask for your current company to make an adjustment for you if that is possible.
There are many factors that may affect you during the self-reflection process. For example, you may have a creative idea to start your own business and maybe you will decide that the new year will be the right time for you.
Some people may find they are satisfied with their financial package or responsibilities, but realise they do not like the company culture or their personal values do not align with their company’s corporate values.
The beginning of the new year always feels like a great time to change your job. This is the reason why January and February are the months with the highest number of job openings and the fastest hiring process.
Make your plan for the new year
Great, now you have completed your self-reflection and you know your goals for the new year. Now you need to take action and make a plan of how you will succeed.
-Are you applying to a new position?
You need to craft a really good CV and pick up useful skills for the position you are applying for. Are you aiming for a promotion in your current job? You need to make a plan with actions you need to take to get the promotion you desire. No matter what your desire for the new year is, if you stay organised, prioritising your needs and wants you will surely make a positive change this year.
We hope that this blog post will help you and motivate you to maximise your career potential this holiday season. However, do not forget to enjoy time with your family and friends, and embrace the holiday season and mood.
